Dr. Mangala Wani and her team can help mothers and babies by:
● Providing prenatal information and counselling to ensure that babies and moms get the best start!.
● Assessing latch or helping to establish a latch in a baby that is not yet latching.
● Assessing milk transfer and helping to determine if low milk supply or flow is a problem.
● Diagnosing possible causes for nipple pain and or breast pain.
● Determining contributing factors when the breastfed baby is slow to gain weight.
● Helping to determine possible reasons for a fussy breastfed baby.
● Providing information to help mothers understand early feeding cues.
● Assisting with breastfeeding for twins.
● Determining factors associated with older babies who start refusing or pulling at the breast.
● Education with the expression of milk using the electric breast pump to best suit your needs.
● Advice on complementary feeding.
Day of your visit:
● Make sure your baby is hungry, but not overly so. A good gauge is to feed him/her about 2 hours before the visit.
● If he/she is very hungry within the two-hour window, limit the time of feeding at the breast or provide a smaller feed (via bottle, if supplementing either with your expressed milk or formula). Please don’t worry if you need to feed again sooner for any reason – we need a happy, hungry (but not frustrated and starving!), baby.
● Don’t forget to feed yourself, too! Bring a snack along, if you like! You’ll be with us for a while.
You should bring with you
Anyone you want to be there with you, including dad, grandma, or other members of your support system.
● Any tools you might be using – your pump, nipple shield, etc.
● Any supplements and bottles (pumped milk or formula, at least one feeding) if you are using them.
● Any questions or concerns you have – it helps to write them down beforehand.
